The Wisconsin Hodags are sad to announce the passing of Dave Jewell, Madison Ultimate legend and Hodag alum. Dave joined the UW Madison team in 1978, a year after it was founded. He was the team's MVP for its first 5 years running, and continued as a coach from 1978-87. Beyond the Hodags, Dave left a significant mark on the Madison disc sports community, taking part in running local tournaments and two Madison disc golf leagues.
Beyond his work in Madison, Dave Jewell was a professional disc freestyler for many years, including 6 top 5 finishes during the 25 years in a row that he competed in freestyle at the world championships. He performed professionally for the Air Aces Frisbee Show, and has taken his show worldwide to nearly 50 countries.
Dave loved to travel spreading the joy of Frisbee wherever he went, and is celebrated by all those he inspired and mentored throughout his life. If you have memories or stories of Dave that you would like to share, please feel free to reach out and we will add them to this page.
